Institute of Medical Statistics

Innovative Trial Design and Data Analysis

Context

Medical statistics utilizes statistical methods to analyse and interpret clinical and healthcare-related data. Through rigorous analysis and precise interpretation it addresses medical research questions to facilitate clear, data-driven decisions.

Scope

Alongside our emphasis on methodological research in medical statistics, we actively participate in scientific collaborations for the planning, evaluation, and publication of medical studies. Annually, the Institute of Medical Statistics cooperates in up to 200 projects. Additionally, we oversee the integration of statistical education within the medical curriculum, and co-lead the PhD program offered by the Center for Medical Data Science.

Research Groups

Our primary research objective is to refine statistical methodologies in the field of medical research. This includes advancing adaptive clinical trial design and platform trials, multiple hypotheses testing, survival analysis, planning and analysis of animal trials, innovative designs for high-dimensional genetic studies, and non-linear Bayesian methods. In addition to developing these methods, we also incorporate them into open-source software, thus facilitating their practical application.

Further Information

Established in 1969, the institute originally functioned as an independent ‘Department of Medical Statistics and Documentation’ within the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. In 2004, it joined forces with the Department of Medical Computer Sciences to form the ‘Core Unit for Medical Statistics and Informatics (MSI)’ at the Medical University of Vienna. From 2010 onwards, the Institute became a part of the ‘Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Intelligent Systems (CeMSIIS)’. As of 1 January 2023, the center has been renamed and is now known as the ‘Center for Medical Data Science’.
