Within the Medicine Degree Programme the Institute of Medical Statistics organises the implementation of the study module SSM2 (Block 17) as well as the statistics methods seminar in the study module SSM4.
The new curriculum for medical studies at MedUni Vienna (MCW) includes so-called “Special Study Modules” (SSM1–SSM4), in which the fundamentals of medical research methods are taught. In particular, the skills required to carry out an empirical diploma thesis are to be acquired. The Institute of Medical Statistics organises the implementation of the study module SSM2 (Block 17) as well as the statistics methods seminar in the study module SSM4.
In the study module SSM2 of the MCW, the statistical basics of planning scientific studies and evaluating projects are taught, including fundamental considerations of the role of random fluctuation, measurement error and biological variability. The internationally applicable standards in this field are also addressed with examples. In the compulsory practical course, which takes place in the computer rooms of the Medical University of Vienna, students learn how to implement the contents using a statistical programme package. In the compulsory elective part, which takes place in parallel, the knowledge gained is applied in a concrete project.
The Statistics Methods Seminar (SSM4) (in the tertial Applied Medical Sciences I, 3rd section) serves to support the students in statistical aspects of the diploma thesis. Individual advice on the thesis project is offered in small groups.
